Medicine for Children and Teenagers
Each stage of life is characterized by its own challenges and health issues. That's why doctors adapt their approach and type of care to each patient. With this in mind, at the Humani private medical clinic, we offer family, children's, and adolescent medical services in Rosemère. Our medical team includes Dr. Geneviève Filteau, a general practitioner who particularly enjoys working with the whole family in her clinic: babies, children, and teens.

Medical care for children and teens: always important
From birth to age two, babies need to be seen by a doctor many times. This is a good way to monitor their growth and development and ensure that everything is progressing normally, without any major problems. After this age, it is still important to have your child seen by a doctor: growth may be slower than before, but it continues. Until the age of eight, these check-ups should take place annually, or more frequently if the young patient has any health problems. After that, it always depends on the health of the child or teenager.
However, specific health problems associated with childhood and adolescence may arise and require consultation, treatment, or more or less prolonged care.

Stomach Aches in Children:
Children often complain of stomach aches. This is a common condition in children and can have many causes. It is a symptom associated with several infections, diseases, and health conditions. For example, stomachaches often accompany vomiting and diarrhea associated with gastroenteritis. They can also be felt during a urinary tract infection or be related to constipation, gastrointestinal problems, and intolerances (lactose, gluten, celiac disease). To find the cause, it is important to pay attention to the type of stomach ache (time, duration, and intensity of episodes, persistence over time) and any accompanying symptoms. If the pain is sudden and severe, it could be due to appendicitis, a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
Stomach aches in children are not always due to physical conditions. They are sometimes manifestations of stress and anxiety. Children may suffer from them when they are going through changes (starting school, a new teacher, moving house, parental separation, etc.). They can also appear before an exam, an oral presentation, a sports competition, or an artistic performance. In some cases, stomachaches are faked in order to get attention or avoid facing a difficult situation. This is no reason to downplay the situation: it is important to try to understand the message behind the stomachaches, even if they seem fake or exaggerated.

Anxiety in Children
Anxiety, like fear, is a reaction to a “dangerous” situation. Fear arises in the presence of a real threat, while anxiety manifests itself in response to a perceived or imagined threat (feeling of danger). Very young children, such as those of school age, can be affected by anxiety. Several factors can contribute to this:
- Performance pressures or overly high expectations placed on the child
- Irrational fears (monsters and ghosts, wolves, thunderstorms, etc.)
- New experiences and major changes
- Lack of routine and supervision
- Overprotection
- Exposure to traumatic events (in person, through television, or through stories told by an adult).
