Your aviation medicine evaluation with Dr. Jocelyn Lebel, a Transport Canada accredited physician.
Dr Jocelyn Lebel
After five years of practice as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, twenty-six years of experience as an emergency physician, and several years in family medicine practice, Dr. Lebel, accredited by Transport Canada, has dedicated the past ten years to aviation medicine, specifically focusing on the (re)certification of flight crews.

Why is a medical evaluation essential for pilots?
During piloting, whether private or commercial, the human body is subjected to specific environmental and physiological stresses (altitude, pressure variations, stress, continuous vigilance). In the context of aviation medicine, the medical evaluation aims to ensure that the pilot's physiological and cognitive mechanisms are functioning optimally to guarantee in-flight safety and prevent any risk of sudden incapacitation.
It is particularly important to undergo regular aviation medical evaluations, as they allow for the early detection of cardiovascular, neurological, visual, auditory, or metabolic conditions that could compromise flight safety. For example, uncontrolled high blood pressure or early-stage diabetes can progress without major symptoms while significantly increasing risks in the cockpit.
That is why, during your consultation with our Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME), we will review your lifestyle habits, your medical history, and the specific requirements tied to your license category (Category 1, 2, 3, or 4) in detail. Screening tests, such as urinalysis, blood tests, or an electrocardiogram (ECG), can be performed on-site depending on your age and Transport Canada regulations. An assessment of your visual, auditory, and overall health will also be conducted.

The pilot medical exam: Procedure and follow-up at our Rosemère clinic
Completing your regulatory medical exam helps preserve your flight privileges and your safety, while preventing health complications that could negatively impact your career or your passion.
Your appointment consists of several steps. The initial evaluation includes an in-depth medical questionnaire and a targeted physical exam (cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and locomotor functions). Precise functional tests, notably the measurement of visual acuity, color vision, and hearing, are performed to strictly meet aviation safety standards.
Depending on your state of health and the presence of risk factors, additional diagnostic tests may be necessary. Should any abnormalities be detected during the evaluation, our doctor can refer you to a specialist (cardiologist, ophthalmologist, ENT, or neurologist). The specialist will perform the required investigations in order to issue the medical recommendations needed to regularize your file with Transport Canada's Civil Aviation Medicine branch.
Furthermore, psychological health and fatigue management play a crucial role in aviation. Some pilots may face performance stress, anxiety, or sleep disorders (such as obstructive sleep apnea), which can affect alertness in flight. During the consultation, these aspects can be discussed in complete confidentiality to guide you toward tailored solutions or professional support if necessary.
Take flight with complete peace of mind.
